Gaps in Public Awareness About BRCA and Genetic Testing in Prostate Cancer: Social Media Landscape Analysis

Background Genetic testing, particularly for BRCA1/2, is increasingly important in prostate cancer (PCa) care, with impact on PCa management and hereditary risk. However, the extent of public awareness online discourse social media unknown, presents opportunities to identify gaps enhance population uptake advances precision medicine. Objective The objective this study was characterize activity engagement across multiple platforms (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube) regarding BRCA genetic testing compared breast cancer, which has a long history awareness, advocacy, prominent presence. Methods Symplur Signals analytics platform used obtain metrics tweets about (1) #BRCA #breastcancer, (2) #prostatecancer, (3) #genetictesting (4) #prostatecancer from 2016 2020. We examined total number tweets, users, reach each hashtag, performed content analysis subset tweets. Facebook YouTube were queried using analogous search terms, calculated. Results During 5-year period, there 10,005 versus 1008 #prostatecancer. There also more #breastcancer (n=1748), #genetic (n=328).
